Connecting the Community through Sports NASCAR has selected the Homestead Miami Speedway to host its season-ending championship event on an annual basis, as the Nextel Cup roars to a conclusion each year. Miami is also the site of one of the nation’s fastest growing marathons. The ING Tropical Marathon attracts the top runners from around the world to enjoy one of the most scenic courses anywhere. No city has crowned more Super Bowl champions than Miami, including Super Bowl XLI in 2007, and a return visit to Dolphin Stadium slated for 2010. The FedEx Orange Bowl continues its annual tradition, celebrating the best of college football. The NCAA men’s basketball tournament is also set to return to Miami in 2009. With our year-round weather, state of the art facilities, shopping, attractions, golf courses, hotels, beaches, and everything else, Miami has become the destination of choice for many other events at every different level. The opportunities are endless. Through sports we connect our community, no matter age, gender, race, culture, or creed the one thing that connects us all is our love of the game…our love of sports. So check back here each week to find out what new and what’s happening, as we connect you with Miami Sports!
The Front Page... We have also begun to focus more on sports in our community. Our slogan, “Connecting the Community through Sports”, defines this focus. There are a wide variety of sports activities and opportunities in Miami-Dade County, and we want to play an active part in making the connection between our community and these programs. In order to do that, we need your help. The Miami-Dade Sports Commission is currently in the process of developing a number of committees, such as our Olympic Development Committee, to help us promote and develop various sports opportunities. We are also looking for people in our community that are leaders in sports ranging from Archery to Gymnastics to Water Polo and everything in between to serve as Sports Committee Chairs to help us evaluate opportunities that arise in specific sports. I encourage everyone involved in or interested in sports to send us an e-mail or call if you are interested in participating in one of our committees, or if you would simply would like to support sports in our community as a Miami Sports member. Sports are a part of the fabric of any community, and we invite you to help us make it a stronger part of ours. ~Mike Sophia, Executive Director Upcoming EVENTS...
