USOC Education Programs USOC 2008 RESPECT The “Real Athletes Show Respect” campaign took place in Miami-Dade County on May 7, 2008 at Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach, during Olympic Week in America (May 5-9, 2008). Olympian Gary Hall, Sr. (Swimming 68’, 72’ & 76’) spoke to over 200 students as an ambassador for the Olympic Movement and this year’s theme: Respect. Dr. Hall talked about the importance of having respect and what it means to show respect in athletic competition and in life. The USOC’s multi-year National Olympic Education Program promotes Olympic Ideals and Values. Olympians and Paralympians speak to elementary, middle and high school students about their personal history, and about their experiences as athletes and representatives of our nation. Each Olympian and Paralympian is supplied with a DVD with Olympic and Paralympic highlight footage and stories of athletes whose actions espouse the positive aspects of the Olympic Movement.
USOC 2007 SPORTSMANSHIP The USOC announced earlier this year that the Olympic value of “Sportsmanship” would be the theme promoted by the organization in 2007 as part of its multi-year National Olympic Education Program. The Miami-Dade Sports Commission is working with the USOC to coordinate the appearances of local Olympians or Olympic hopefuls. “Real Athletes are Good Sports” will be the message promoted to these students, along with an emphasis on the importance of healthy and active lifestyles. Throughout the year, Olympians and Paralympians will continue to speak to Miami-Dade County Public School students about their personal histories and experiences as representatives of our nation. Many of these speaking events will coincide with Sports Commission hosted events.
